Swaner Eco Center: Natural Curiousity Encouraged!
The natural beauty of Park City and its surrounding mountains is evident even if you only drive through Kimball Junction on your way to ski or snowboard.
The Swaner Eco-Center overlooks Park City's vast open spaces. The "greenest building in Utah" houses an amazing exhibits, a theater as well as n interactive climbing wall which educates as much as it entertains.
However, tucked off of I-80 and Highway 224 on Center Drive is the most amazing “green” building in Utah. Do your family a huge favor and make plans to visit this environmental gem. The Swaner EcoCenter, opened in September 2008, is part of the 1,200 acre Swaner Preserve.
Each week, you can embark on a nature walk to learn about the Utah ecosystem. Be sure to wear boots or mud shoes and make your reservations at least a day in advance. $5 for non-members.
Children of all ages are encouraged to visit and explore the hands on exhibits which tell the stories of the surrounding wetlands, wildlife and native plants.
The white barn, part of the 107-acre historic Swaner Farm, can easily be seen from Highway 224. The barn is slated to be restored to host community events and programs.
We embarked on our own self guided tour through Utah’s “greenest building” but you can also take a docent led tour. My preschooler’s favorite exhibit is the two story interactive vertical wall.
Swaner Eco-Center hikes might get you close to a different type of local resident.
You have to experience it to fully appreciate the amazing landscapes around you. Another family favorite is the use of time lapse photographs to illustrate the changing seasons at the Swaner Preserve.
Kids will have fun exploring the nearly 10 miles of trails throughout the Swaner Preserve and into Park City.
The Swaner EcoCenter is located at 1258 Center Drive in Park City, Utah.
