Ski Lodging: Hotel or Condo?

Hopefully by now you have decided to head to the slopes with your family this winter and are just about to make reservations.  But should you stay in a hotel or a condo?

Here are some pros and cons to consider before you book:

Hotels: Who doesn't love room service?

 Pros:

  • "Brand" hotels you are familiar with can offer reliability.

  • Easy to search for online reviews.

  • If you collect "points" from a particular chain, you might be able to redeem for free nights.

  • Daily housekeeping.  No one wants to clean on vacation!

  • Lots of amenities - pools, spas, restaurants, room service, and shuttles or ski valet.

  • Sometimes breakfast is included with your stay.

Cons:

  • The more amenities, the higher the price.

  • Not much room for larger families, meaning more than 4 will require two rooms.

  • If there is on site laundry, it will be down the hall or on another floor.

  • No full kitchen.

Condos: Gotta love extra space!

Pros:

  • Lots of room for larger families - more bedrooms, bathrooms, and TV's!

  • Come in all sizes and price ranges.

  • Many have amenities of a hotel. Get the details!

  • Full kitchens = not having to eat out 3 meals a day.  Cooking may be on the "Not to Do" list,  but bringing a pile of kids out to every meal is not only expensive, it's not always fun.

  • Washer and dryer.  A HUGE bonus! You can pack less and save on baggage fees.  And who has several days worth of ski socks, long underwear, and neck gaiters?  I know we don't! No one can never truly escape laundry duty, so why not go home with everything clean and ready to unpack?

Cons:

  • Possibly less amenities

  • Can be older, and not recently refurbished.

  • Not knowing exactly what you are getting.

This last point can be alleviated by asking lots of questions, checking photos of the unit, and having the features listed in your rental contract. Many ski resorts also have timeshare or condo hotels, where the condo and hotel room blend together into one to offer everything you could need. You can even find "hotel brand" condos that will accept your points towards a free stay!

Even before kids, my husband and I always preferred the extra space of a condo with the flexibility that comes with having a kitchen and washer/dryer.  With the addition of four kids, we don't vacation any other way.

Still not sure? If you are headed to Park City Mountain Resort, why not contact their lodging specialists to get the scoop.  They will have all the inside details and possibly even a great package to offer you!

We love both....hotels for a 2 night stay or just when it's hubby and I. Otherwise our family loves a condo/house to really spread out and enjoy comforts like home while away. The washer/dryer for me is the saving grace!

Well, it DEPENDS on the condo complex and WHO you book through. Booking directly through the condo complex generally guarantees you know EXACTLY what you're getting. If you book through a third party, there are no guarantees on the quality of your unit-- only your bedding preference.

Great point. It's so important to know who you are booking through. Look for another post from Snowmamas in the future about what to ask when booking...including this very question.

So true! I have a love/hate relationship with the washer /dryer. Hate doing wash, love when everything is clean.

For me, the biggest plus for a condo (particularly in the winter) is to have a washer/dryer. It's so great to return back after a wet ski day and get your clothes clean!!
