What to Wear Spring Skiing

I love spring skiing!  Sunshine, blue skies, warm temperatures, and fresh powder - It’s such a fun time to be on the mountain.

Winter is now warming to spring, and you might be wondering how to pack for your ski vacation.  Spring conditions can really vary; from snowy and chilly, to warm and sunny, so it’s always a good idea to bring layers, but opt for lighter layers.  From head to toe, here are some ideas to keep you comfortable for the best time on the slopes.

Helmet
Look for one with vents, you will definitely want the vents open this time of year.

Sunscreen
Use a waterproof/sport sunblock and re-apply several times throughout the day.  The bright spring sun, high altitudes and reflection off the snow make sunburns a sure thing without good skin protection.  Don't forget a lip balm with UV protection!

Sunglasses or Goggles
The reflection from the snow can really be intense.  Make sure your sunglasses or goggles have UV protection and are designed to cut the glare on sunny days.

Jacket/Top
On a warm spring day you will see everything from bikinis to t-shirts to jackets.  Mornings will of course be the coldest time of day, so start with a thin, wicking base layer, a mid layer and waterproof/windproof shell with zippered vents.  Most likely you will have the vents open before lunch, and if it’s really warm peel off a layer two – or go for the bikini if, you dare.

Pants
A base layer is not needed this time of year.  Unless it’s unseasonably cold, you should be good to go with just your ski pants.  Word to the wise - be careful if you choose to unzip the vents in your pants so as to, ahem, not give out too much information.

Socks
Thin wool socks are the best for keeping your feet temperate and dry.  I love my light SmartWool socks, they are a great fit and perfect for warmer weather conditions.

Gloves
Handwarmers are not necessary, neither are glove liners.

iPod
Create a playlist with some fresh tunes, its time to pump it up!

Enjoy your trip!

I need this last week. While mornings were a bit brisk, we were SOAKING WET from sweat by the end of the day. Too much information, I know but next year we need to plan better...and not be too lazy to take off some of our layers and check them in. ;)
