Progression to Snowmama: How Adaptive Skiing Changed Our Family

Posted by Barb on December 13, 2010

Barb Family on Snow (barb-adaptive-skiing)I will never forget the day my husband came home and asked, “What do you think of Denver?” “It snows there,” I said and I walked out of the room thinking that was the end of this discussion. Six weeks later I was unpacking boxes in our Craftsman-styled home nestled among the tall ponderosa south of Denver, wondering how I ended up there.

And just a few months after that, with a pantry packed to the rafters in preparation for what I was sure was the oncoming Armageddon, I saw snow fall for the first time. The world didn’t end and in the ensuing two years as I made my way from a sun worshipping desert dweller into a full-fledged “Snowmama".

It’s true. I have the badge to prove it.

My progression to Snowmama started when a friend suggested we try adaptive skiing at the National Sports Center for the Disabled in Winter Park, CO. My younger son Carter is a full time wheel chair user. One day, right? I could do that.

But when Carter, 12, came sliding down that hill in his sit-ski with his face lit up like a Christmas tree, I knew I was done for. “Mom, I finally found a sport I love,” he said. “I can go as fast or slow as I want and no one throws balls at me.” He hadn’t liked any of the other adaptive sports we’d tried.

Adaptive skiing has leveled the playing field for my competitive family and has given Carter a sport where he excels. The freedom he feels flying down the mountain is worth all the work for me--packing, planning and freezing my buns off watching. Some of my favorite memories are from seeing my boys ski and snowboard together.

Yes, I’m a proud Snowmama but I don’t ski or snowboard. I’ll be in the lodge in front of a roaring fire sipping a latte.
