Healthy Snacks for Kids on the Slopes
Eating healthy when traveling can be a challenge. Keeping our kids energized with healthy choices on the mountain is even tougher. With a bit of planning and effort, you can avoid the junk food temptation and keep your kiddos properly fueled.
Some of my children’s favorite snacks on the slopes include:
- String cheese. I was initially a bit wary cheese would freeze or get too mushy. But when my kids put it in their coat pocket, the outdoor temperatures kept it neither too hot nor too cold, but rather just right. Goldilocks would be proud.
- Nuts. Almonds are a family favorite, as are cashews or peanuts. Just don’t include pistachios like we did one time. Trust me: shelling those bad boys while wearing gloves can be problematic.
- G.O.R.P. "Good Old Raisins and Peanuts" have saved my behind more than once in the backcountry. This staple of hiking snacks simply involves mixing ingredients together on a 1-to-1 basis. Or 2-to-1 when chocolate chips are involved.
- Energy Bars and Fruit Snacks. My kids are huge fans of Clif Kid’s Organic ZBar and their Organic Twisted Fruit. My son even calls the latter his “licorice.” I have yet to correct him for obvious reasons.
- The Ski Bunny Snack Mix. I found this great recipe at What’s Cooking Blog:
Ski Bunny Snack Mix
Dried coconut ribbons (not sweetened shredded coconut)
Annie’s cheddar bunny crackers
Dried cherries, cranberries or golden raisins
Sliced or slivered almonds
Another tip: remember to pack Ziploc® bags. Try to aim for a good balance of fiber, protein, fat and carbohydrates. Your kids will be working hard on the slopes and maintaining a stable blood sugar level is in everyone's best interest.
